The new factory started to produce the P.38 pistol again starting in the mid 1950s. Fritz Walther and his brothers built a new factory in Ulm in the south end of the Western part of Germany and started producing goods in 1946. The Walther factory in Zella-Mehlis was destroyed in 1946 by the Soviets. Production stopped when American forces captured the factory in early April, 1945. Therefore, at the beginning of 1940, the pistols produced by the Walther plant were marked with the code 480 to indicate that Walther was the manufacturer. The Germans were afraid that markings such as the Walther banner would make it easy for the Allied forces to determine a specific weapons manufacturer and attack the plant. In 1940, the Walther banner was replaced by a code to indicate the manufacturer. The first weapons were marked with the Walther banner on the slide. In the early years, the P.38 was produced only by the firm of Carl Walther in Zella-Mehlis, Germany. Fritz Walther and Fritz Barthelmes are the two major names involved in the design and development of this pistol.

I drove my p38 yesterday for the first time in months, and I missed how easily it wafts about, everything is just effortless.
The 4.0 which has a bit less power, downshifts more readily, which may lead to less over heating, which can be a leading cause of failures amongst p38s. However, there is some debate between which is more reliable, the bosch 4.0 (not avail in 02) or the bosch 4.6. (Keep in mind updates are non existent) Also it's likely to have the least miles, which given the right amount of care, will last the longest/yeild the highest resale. Plus nav was pretty wide spread on the 02's, and the easier to use (slightly) alpine nav. Well, I don't think the 02 has the best build quality (99-02 being about the same imo), but it has all the fancy wood/chrome trim bits that people (not I) seem to like, has most of the options (although there is one crazy stereo option, I've only seen one photo of, involves a crazy centre channel).
